Unhappy 2008 FEH Starts, then dreaded Stop Safely Now immediately

Car's been running fine - I bought it new way back when, has just under 138k miles on it. Since the pandemic it has been sitting cold a lot more often than it ever used to, but aside from having to use the magic jumpstart button a few times (and that's on me, obvs) it's been steady. Other than having to replace the fans for the hybrid battery last year, nothing out of the ordinary.

Today I went to start it up - car's been sitting for less than a week, and in moderate temps. Started right up, but within a few minutes the engine shut off, "Stop Safely Now' displayed on dash, along with yellow wrench and engine, and red triangle of doom.

Before I hauled out my scanner I wondered if it was a low hybrid battery issue again, so did that hybrid jump process and the car started right up again .... .and then died again and wouldn't restart. At least - until I walked away for 5-10 mins for . . something to reset? I finally realized it wasn't the jumpstart that was helping, it was the 8 minute wait for things to reset (or whatever it is doing).

In the past when the hybrid battery got jumped, the car stayed running (and I'd drive it for a good long while to ensure it got some charge). Today the engine shuts down within a few seconds every time.

I tried clearing the codes after I'd jumped it and restarted it - and these are the codes after rescanning.

Does anyone have suggestions on what I should try, or what I should tell my mechanic?

I'm hoping to get many more years out of this car (and hybrid battery) ... .

thanks!

Well, the jump start cycle is about 8 minutes. Button should be pressed, door closed, and then you go away for 8+ minutes

Are you allowing it to complete?

Is your 12V in good shape and fully charged? A weak 12V can make the jump starter work very poorly.

Recommend the following:

Put 12V on charger to ensure 12V is at full charge.
Leave charger attached.
Turn ignition on, clear codes.
When instructed, turn key off, but leave it off for 15 seconds.
Turn ignition on, check codes. Report here.

Go into BCM, table view, add all PIDS. Check them and report here.

I did wait the full 8 minutes each time, keys out ….not sure about the door being closed each time but i will try again tomorrow and confirm door is closed.

i set a timet each time to ensure at least 8 minutes elapsed before trying to start it.

More updates hopefully tomorrow.

thanks!

I don’t currently have a 12v charger but it sure sounds like I need one.

Can someone recommended one?

thanks!

Pick up any 6-10A charger at Walmart or whatever's locally available.

Sorry - to clarify are you meaning a charger for the ICE battery ?

ICE battery should be good - but I do have a friend’s charger I will put on it shortly to be sure before I try to jump the hybrid battery from it again.

It is doing very different things than the previous times the hybrid battery was depleted, which is what worries me. It also was sitting for less than a week, which .. usually it takes longer than that. 🤔

But sincerely hoping I have better luck after attempting it again later.

The only 12V battery is the battery under the hood. It needs to be healthy and fully charged for diagnostics and best jump starter results.

Please note that my list of action items does not include using the jump starter. Please do not use the jump starter until AFTER you have completed those steps.

I have mixed results to report ? I had attached the 12v battery jump starter before I read your earlier reply NOT to - have ordered an actual trickle charger to be arriving later today. (The FEH is the only car in the house so somewhat limited)..

After letting the jump starter (is a DeWalt DXAEJ14 if that matters) stay connected to the 12v battery terminals for 10-15 minutes, I started the hybrid jump process again.

And .. it worked! Car started and remained started. I drove it around for about an hour - city driving, stops and starts, and the display shows the hybrid battery is now about 2/3rds charged. Seems fine.

Got home, shut car off, connected ODB reader, cleared codes and scanned FORscan again:

(OK) [14:50:16.322] Connection to vehicle has been established
(OK) [14:50:18.955] Vehicle: Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute/Mercury Mariner HEV / ATKINSON 4V 2.3L 2008 ( 2008 MY ), VIN: 1FM**************

(OK) [14:50:21.057] Found module: ACM - Audio Control Module
(OK) [14:50:21.152] Found module: GEM/SJB - Generic Electronic Module / Smart Junction Box

Powertrain Control Module is now the only DTC? Should I scan again after driving it again?

is there anything else I should do here?

thanks so much for the help btw - I had not realized the 12v battery could have enough charge to start the car and power all the electricals inside, but not enough juice for the jump start procedure. That trickle charger will come in handy if it happens again!

P1000 is because you cleared the codes. That just means the car isn't ready for emissions testing yet.
