Occam's razor doesn't suggest that. It suggests you eliminate all NON INFLUENTIAL variables. Like your hair color. It does not suggest eliminating variables such as wind, temperature, driver skill etc.

It is great to know the sweet spot, but that isn't the most important factor for FE. In fact, It is becoming common knowledge that doing a pulse and glide at most acceleration rates doesn't realy make that much difference.

If you just want to set your cruise control and take what you get then your chart is good at showing what to expect. It is not good at showing replacement of a drivers skill because the two are not comparable.

What you need to do is add the lower speeds to the chart and find out where it levels off at the low end. You might fnd around 20mph mileage drops off. Then you can get your peak. This will be the most a driver can get with cruise control. I'm betting it will be a bit lower than what a skilled driver can get.

 

I'd like to suggest going beyond civility and have a truce.

It's apparent the inquiries for data are not coming from a dispassionate mind, esp. when it concerns a vehicle other than a Prius and perhaps hypermiling from reading his posts since last night. I see no point in pitting one 40mpg+ vehicle against another - there are not enough of them.

bwilson4web, it's likely you knew about the Insight Marathon before the event surfing CleanMPG - that would have been the best time to make suggestions on data to collect.

Delta, I don't think you could make the assumption he knew about it before hand. I'm sure if he did he would have made the suggestion.

 

It's very possible Tom, but a recent post suggests he might have been looking there (concerning one of his complaints).

Just the same, hoping bwilson4web and I can mutually agree to do posts that are more postive than the ones in the last 24 hours and agree to disagree on some things...

 

The lower range needs to be mapped. We do have a simulator plot but I prefer to benchmark the performance.

As long as there is no minimum speed for a vehicle endurance run, one might as well try the maximum MPG, endurance speed but it would be boring. It would be safer to automate everything and just monitor the systems.

I think you all are not understanding what Bob was saying. I think what he is getting at is that if the steady state mpg at say 20 mph is 115 mpg, and the guys got 170 mpg at an average speed of 20 mph than driver skill is worth 170 - 115 = 55 mpg. OTOH if they got the same or less than steady state than they might as well just have set the cruise.....

Sounds good. I guess I just don't like to equate cruise control with skill. Maybe I'd be happy if it was A drivers skill is worth 170mpg and cruise control is worth 115. One doesn't replace the other. They are apples to oranges. By saying the drivers skill is only worth 55mpg is assuming cruise control is part of the equasion which is very rarely if ever is the case. so drivers skill = 170mpg cruise control = 115mpg. Not drivers skill = 55mpg and cruise control = 115.

Does that make sense?
