Lets throw out some facts:
Big Oil received between 78-158 billion dollars in Federal subsidies via this link: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/07/03/price-of-oil-hidden-oil-s_n_110606.html

In 2007 the USA consumed 7.5 billion barrels of oil via this link:
http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/ask/crudeoil_faqs.asp

A barrel of oil produces 19.6 gallons of finished gasoline via this link: http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/ask/gasoline_faqs.asp

That means the per gallon Federal subsidy cost of gasoline is between 0.53 and $1.07. This is more than what the ethanol industry receives.

Water useage is terrible with the oil industry as this is induced underground to increase pressure and increase oil flow. The Ghawar oil field (the world's largest) in the Mid-East produces 4.5 million barrels of oil daily but uses 7 million barrels of seawater for this purpose! Link: http://www.energybulletin.net/node/1269
The Alberta (Canada) oil sands require 2-4.5 units of water per unit of synethetic oil produced. Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_sands
Once this water is forced down a hole, it is unuseable again and an environmental hazard.
I'm for renewable ethanol and the ramping up of cellulose ethanol production.
