Well, designing race cars isn’t cheap and never will be. So where is the funding coming from for these new innovative projects such as the Mission R? The answer: Taycan sales.

According to an article by Reuters, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume stated, “Our original production capacity for the Taycan was 20,000 units this year — we’ve sold that many in the first half of the year.”

The sales numbers indicate that Porsche underestimated the popularity and success of the Taycan by more than half. Unfortunately for them and eager customers alike, this did have some duly consequences. This has meant that the wait time to purchase a Taycan model has now been backed up to six months as opposed to the standard four month wait time. However, it’s great news for the German automaker, proving the profitability of their latest technology.

Penetration into rapidly growing EV markets such as China was an instrumental aspect of the Taycan’s success. Blume stated, “Incoming orders are huge – they are good in China too.”

Porsche continues to impress with their growth within the electrification space. However, they still have a lot left of on the table for the future.

This includes the upcoming 2023 all-electric Macan, which will be sure to sell very well if the Taycan’s initial success is any indication of the potential of EV sales.
