Following in the footsteps of the Chevrolet Volt and Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid, Mitsubishi will release its first plug-in hybrid in 2013, based around the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport midsize crossover.

Pairing a 1.6-liter four with an electric motor and a
lithium-ion battery pack, the new Outlander should offer decent
performance and modest off-road capabilities, but there is no word on
electric cruising range just yet.

The plug-in hybrid will be the
second car to use Mitsubishi’s EV technology, which will make its debut
on the all-electric i-MiEV early next year. Six additional models,
either plug-in hybrids or battery electric cars, will make it to market
by the end of 2015.
