Acura Adding Hybrids for 2012
It has been a bit of a rough year for Acura, with sales down and a lack
of compelling all-new products. Honda’s luxury brand hopes to change
that soon with the introduction of at least two hybrids, Automotive News
reports. Even as Honda remains a leader in hybrid powertrain
development, its Acura brand has inexplicably been left out in the cold,
until now.
The TL, set to launch with a redesign in 2013, will use 3.5-liter V6
with cylinder deactivation, stop-start ignition and a hybrid system set
to return much better fuel efficiency than the current base model’s 20
city/29 highway mpg. While Acura continues to fuss with the current TL’s
controversial styling, the company needs the next TL to become a hit.
Also slated for production and likely coming late next year is a hybrid
version of the company’s successful MDX midsize crossover. Expect it to
use a 3.5-liter related to the engine in the TL combined with a mild
hybrid system. More hybrids could be in the pipeline as well.
