Set to make its debut at the Moab Easter Jeep Safari, the Wrangler Magneto concept seems to be an improvement on the standard V6 Jeep in every way! At least on paper.

Wrangler Magneto Concept

Jeep became the talk of the town in the automotive industry earlier in the week when they unveiled the Wrangler Magneto concept. The concept off-roader was teased a few weeks back with a few illustrations. And ahead of its first public appearance on the final weekend of March, the manufacturer has released photos of what looks like a prototype.

Easter Jeep Safari

As has become a tradition of the Easter Jeep Safari, the company is coming in hot with a number of interesting concepts. None more intriguing than the electric-powered Jeep Wrangler Magneto, which features a manual transmission! That's right! An EV Wrangler with a manual.

Manual Transmission

And while we've started to see multi-speed transmissions used in EVs such as the Porsche Taycan, we've never seen anything quite like the application used in the Magneto. The approach with the powertrain and drivetrain in the electric Wrangler is a unique one. In terms of packaging, the new system is almost identical to the internal combustion-powered Jeep.

Same Layout as the Gas-Powered Jeep

The electric motor sits where the engine would be, the transmission is where it would normally be, and space formerly occupied by the fuel tank now houses the battery backs. The motor has a very similar output to the 3.6-liter V6 plant, with 285 horsepower and 273-lb-ft of torque. The main difference in terms of performance is in the torque delivery, which is very flat for the EV, improving the 0-60 to 6.8 seconds.

Stall-Proof

The Magneto's manual transmission even has a conventional pedal clutch. In terms of practicality, the biggest advantage the electric Jeep will have over the gas-powered models is in off-roading and rock crawling. Specifically, in low-speed situations. The Wrangler's ability to start the engine without the application of the clutch pedal helps with navigating steep obstacles where there's a risk of stalling or damaging the clutch pad. But the Magneto further improves on that trick.

Improved Capabilities

Having electric motors, which can provide the same amount of torque regardless of speed or rev range, the Magneto concept practically eliminates the possibility of stalling while scaling an off-road incline.

The concept is also equipped with a 2.0-inch lift kit, rock rails, 35-inch tires, and a Warn winch. All the electric equipment is also sealed off and waterproofed, giving it the same water-fording capability as the regular Wrangler.
