2022 Mercedes EQS 580 EV: A Closer Look
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 is a stylish way to save the planet.
CAR FRONT
The Mercedes EQS 580 is certainly a sharp-looking ride that gets compliments where ever it is parked. Under the hood (that can't be raised) are powerful electric motors cranking 516 horsepower, and 631 lbs./ft. of torque. That propels this three-ton machine to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds on a good day.

CHARGE
The claimed range of the EQS is 340 miles. There are three ways to charge. A 240-volt system at home does that task in about 12-14 hours. A common 120-volt socket can be used, but will only generate 40 hours of range in the same charge time. A public supercharger shown here can fill up the battery in just over an hour, but they are not cheap to use. In our case, it was 220 miles of charge in 40 minutes for $34. A full 340-mile visit should be about $50, the same fee for about 11 gallons of gas in a regular car.
POV
From the driver’s seat, that slanted hood is not in view, and this can cause confusion when trying to park visually. This is because it's hard to see how close the vehicle is to a curb or pole. But Mercedes has included a full range of cameras to solve that issue.

INFO SCREEN
Most of the car functions are operated on this infotainment screen. It is huge, so the navigation view is too. The quality and clarity of images are first-rate. However, it was rather amusing to see about a dozen icons showing all the gas stations within a 10-mile radius, since this car doesn't run on gas!

The image shows what power is being used and how much. In the real world, with slow traffic, night driving, and passing other cars on the freeway, the actual range of our EQS was about 300 miles.

GAUGE #1
There are many gauge clusters to choose from.....here is the standard "Classic".

This is the "Understated" gauge.

Our favorite gauge was the "Sport". It changes color as the car accelerates, and looks cool.
MANUAL KNOBS
The only manual knobs often used are here. The center button starts the car. The "dynamic" control offers NORMAL, SPORT, or COMFORT drive modes.
TRUNK
The trunk is huge, and all the power cables and tools are under the floor. There is no spare tire, just a repair kit.
WHEELS
The EQS has four-wheel steering, giving a super-tight turning radius. This is great for making U-turns on the street or fitting in narrow parking spaces.
PRICE
The EQS isn't cheap, and options push the tab even higher. The overall price is about the same as the Mercedes S-Class sedan with its gas-powered turbo V-8 engine. Gas or electric Benz? Take your pick.
