2005 toyota prius

Re: 2005 toyota prius
Hi,
There are two parts:
1) inverter coolant change
2) transaxle oil change
Both of these are 'do it yourself tasks' if you are comfortable will getting under your car to access the 24 mm drain plugs. The service interval is 60,000 miles. For the coolant, you'll need Toyota 'long life' fluid, the 'pink stuff' and transaxle requires Type WS. You'll also need three compression washers for the plugs and I'd recommend having a torque wrench. There are some very good threads in PriusChat.com discussing both.
If you are planning to change the transaxle oil, I am interested in getting a sample of the used oil for testing. I've had one sample at 61k mi tested and it came back pretty good. However, the more samples tested, the better the data.
Which way are you headed? I can post more details here if you are interested:

Re: 2005 toyota prius
I had the dealer do the Transaxle WS fluid at 61,000 miles in my 2004 and he only charged me $79 including the price of the gallon of fluid (about $45). Other than saving the trip to the dealer, it wasn't worth doing it myself.
If you do the coolant loop (separate from the ICE coolant), be careful to bleed it well for trapped air bubles as an overheated Tranny or Inverter is a bad thing. The coolant in the NHW20s should be good to 100,000 miles (and then each 50,000 thereafter according to Toyota).
I'm planning to exchange both coolants (and the sparks as well as an extra tranny fluid change for Bob's database) at around 90,000 miles.
