Question In line magnetic transmission filter?

Has anyone installed an additional filter on their HYBRID? Would it be beneficial on the eCVT? What size transmission lines are on the hybrid?

Thanks all.

Toyota's transaxle (E-CVT) don't need any filter or toyota would have included it.

I don't see any external oil transmission lines. Toyota uses a special pink coolant to help cool inside each of the generator/motors inside the transaxle case. The coolant has lines that go out to a separate radiator. The power split device, (gears) and axle chain evidently don't need cooling.

Their is no oil pump in the transaxle case that I know of. The axle chain pulls oil up everywhere for lubrication.

Look for the small reservoir of pink coolant next to where it says Inverter. This same fluid helps keep the Power Inverter cool using a small temperature controlled electric pump.

I thought there may be a transmission cooler on the hybrid. Thanks for the info, great link.

I suspect there is a chain drive inside the CVT/PSD.

There was a chain drive in the early HSD units. The 2010 Prius no longer has a chain. I don't know about the HSD's in the Lexus or Camry hybrids.

ps,
  1. There was one older Prius fitted with an ATF filter and cooler as an experiment. It proved to be more trouble than it was worth.
  2. Just because Toyota didn't add an ATF filter doesn't mean that one wouldn't help. I change my ATF (type WS) every 60k miles to get the metallic contaminants out. Toyota says that the Type WS ATF is good for the life of the car. I want my Prius to last longer (2004, now at 168k miles).

After a bit of searching, I found this very interesting, but very technical document. On page 41 there is a very good cutaway picture comparing the difference between the (pre 2010) Prius PSD and the 2007+ Camry Hybrid PSD. The Prius has a chain, the TCH dosn't.

After going to this site via the link below, click on "view document". Then click "open"...or "save". After it downloads to a temp folder, you can also save it for future easy reading and reference.

http://www.osti.gov/bridge/purl.cove...928684-rRNS3c/

added: It also discusses the lubrication process, page 39.

To stay on the topic of this thread, a search of the document for "filter" only turned up references to filter capacitors.
