Hi folks,

I have the Toyota added anti-theft alarm and am currently receiving a passive device discount from my insurance company. However, does the TCH have an active disabling anti-theft device as well?

I'm not sure what the insurance company's definition of active vs passive would be. In my opinion the alarm system is active (as in you actively arm it) and your SmartKey is your passive system (it is there without any further action required on your part) since the car cannot be started without the key.

 

If I recall correctly, the TCH is considered an 'immobilzer' and qualifies for the active system discount.
Could be wrong...usually am.

 

I think haroldo is right why else is there the flashing key in the dash???

Without the smartkey, this thing is a "brick". I have seen references on this forum that things get very difficult for even a dealer without a key.

 

That is "passive" because it does not require the drivers intervention. The alarm is active so I guess I will call the insurance company and see if I can get both an passive (already have) and active anti-theft device discount.

According to my insurance company (belairdirect), a passive system is an alarm system that makes noise, but doesn't stop you from driving the car. An active system is one which also immobilizes the car, making it undriveable. The TCH qualifies as having an active system even before you add the Toyota alarm.
