Default 30,000 warning ?? (rant)

I just got a MAINTENANCE REQUIRED warning at 30,000 miles. Coincidentally, I am coming up to an oil change, but I'm about 90 miles away from the 5,000 interval since the last reset. I am aware that the warning shows up at 4900 miles, but this was exactly at 30,000.
More disturbing is the red warning exclamation point. Yellow warnings usually mean, you have some time, it's not urgent, but red is supposed to mean, get thee to a service station and quick!
There is nothing magical about 30,000, is there?
I've replaced my air filter, done oil and filters regularly as well as the tires.
I reset the warning, but I don't like the fact that they put up so severe a warning, for a nonsense milestone. How many people who aren't on top of the minutia will see the red warning and have it cause distress?
I don't like it!

I do the maintenance schedule that I want to do (which is a little more often than the OEM suggestions) and ignore the warnings on the dash. I just reset the minder every 5,000 miles when I am finished.

I agree, but whether it's reset every 5000 miles, or not, there is absolutely nothing that's worth scaring the daylights out of the owner for 30,000 miles. I can see if it coincided with a tune up or other long interval service, but this warning is bizarre. On top of being a red herring it could have an opposite effect by training the owner to ignore the red light warnings.
