Ford has given one tree-hugging family a few more chances to show the environment some love by giving away one of its C-Max Energi Plug-in Hybrids as part of an energy-conservation contest. Colorado's Sattler family beat out "thousands" of entrants in the MyEnergi Lifestyle contest by showing how they live sustainably on a budget. Ford says that if every family practiced the Sattlers' sustainability efforts, the energy used by 32 million US homes would be eliminated, which is Big Foot-sized carbon footprint.
In addition to the car, the Sattlers won a bunch of energy-saving Whirlpool appliances and an Eaton solar inverter, among other goodies. With their home retrofit and the new appliances, the Sattlers will cut their energy use by 60 percent. Touchy-feeliness notwithstanding, the US automaker is looking to continue its strong performance on the hybrid and plug-in front this year. Through June, Ford's green car sales jumped fivefold to more than 46,000 vehicles, including 2,482 C-Max Energi vehicles.
