Default Electric only drive mode

How many of you have observed this? I can consistently get it to come on at around 35MPH by letting up off the gas and let the car coast a bit, then gently touching the gas pedal. Observing the MID display for power flow, I have seen that just the electric is running the car. Interesting!

Just got my EX Friday - but I have been very interested in seeing this. I am trying not to wreck while learning about everything!

If it's similar to the Civic Hybrid (2006 and on): the car will go into electric only under very light load conditions, more so at lower speeds. It's typically very short-lived, any significant increase in load and the gas engine will come back on. I try a little to maintain that state, knowing full well it's very fragile and will quit soon. The thing is: if you going chasing this and get good at it, you'll find your IMA battery running down quickly. IMHO, best to enjoy it but don't chase after it.

Hi Mendel:

Well, I don't chase it, but my 2005 HCH never had anything like this so I think it is cool that you can get a mileage boost by doing this every now and then.

Yes, this this is pretty cool. Who needs a dual-mode after all?

(excuse the pic quality, it's kind of hard to focus while moving)

I've found a couple good spots where I can keep this going for quite a while. The longest is close to two miles!

Bonus pics, latest mileage. Trip B hasn't been reset, actual mileage is 12441. Over 12K miles and already had two oil changes.

Still loving my '10 HIH more each day.

It is much easier to get into the EV mode in the Insight than what I could get in the Civic... Hills are the best place to use the EV mode (going down)

Well, living here in Miami, hard to find any hills to experiment with!

I can finally get mine to consistently go into electric only mode. After a freeway drive and and and exit ramp that is downhill if I just "touch" the accelerator it will keep going on electric only for about 5-6 seconds.
