Default Check engine light, code P2422

Hey Guys,

This weekend my check engine light came on. Of course I happened to be 300 miles from home, but thankfully I found a mechanic in the shop on a Saturday with a code reader. Code P2422, something about the gas tank evap valve. Ok so nothing serious, I don't have to worry about the engine exploding. He reset the code and the light came back on within a few miles, I reset it again using the battery disconnect method and again it came back on after a couple of miles. I have an appointment at the stealer next week but I'm worried they're just going to reset the code again and of course it will come right back on and I'll have to go right back and waste more time.

Take your gas cap off and put it back on making sure you hear it click 4 or more times. After a few days at most the light should go off.

The gas cap was my first thought but I always put it on tight.

I always put it on tight too but I got bit by it once. Called the dealer on my cell when it happened to make an appointment and they told me to reseat it and wait a few days. Is the car running rough or abnormal in any way?

It's running fine, I drove it 300 miles home with no problems other than the light staying on.

The mechanic said he found "Spider webs" in the tank vent tube... Anyway they cleaned it out for free and the light has since stayed off, so all's well that ends well.

  • I had the same problem with my first Civic Hybrid and had the same response from the dealer. They read the computer and said it was due to a misfire in one case and the same as yours in another. While I never conclusively prooved it, I am pretty sure it was related to the gasket on the gas cap and not getting a complete seal. There was a relationship between filling the tank and the light coming on. I also had a suspicion that it may have been after I filled up at a certain station. The light came on and went off for a period of a few weeks, but then finally went off and stayed off. Cleaning the gas cap gasket and filler tube seemed to help - but again I never 100% prooved anything. The problem just finally went away. I do know that an overfilled gas tank resulting gas getting into the evaporative system is supposed to cause the problem.
