Re: 2005 civic averaging 41mpg
In the winter, 41 is not so bad. Since wind resistance is the biggest factor for fuel efficiency, limiting your speed will be the biggest fuel saver. It's a law of physics that applies to every vehicle, no exceptions. You'll probably see 50+ at 60 mph in warm weather, but 5 to 10 less at 75mph. In the winter with a roof rack at 70 mph driving into a 40mph headwind you should expect mileage in the low 30's. Your mileage will have a direct correlation to the energy necessary to do the work you require of it, there's no way around that basic fact.
I've never driven like a hyper-miler and have ranged between 34 and 50mpg on fillups, with an average of 44 mpg over 38 thousand miles. If I was willing to slow down a bit, the numbers would be even better.
