My hybrid got wrecked

My hybrid got wrecked
I was involved in a 5-car pile-up (4th in the chain) on Thursday on my way home from work. I was sitting stopped at a light. I heard a large collision behind me and looked into the rearview mirror to see a giant pick-up moving toward me -- I was rear-ended INTO a BellSouth utility truck. My car is squished It was practically new -- had barely over 5000 miles on it.
I only hope it's totaled by the insurance because I don't trust trying to have it "fixed". The good news is that there are two 2007 Civic Hybrids on the lot right now and if insurance gets in gear we won't have to wait for one.
I am bummed ...

Hope all goes well with the insurance and you can get a new one. It's always sad when a perfectly good car (hybrid no less) is victimized by another driver. All the best.

Re: My hybrid got wrecked
Isn't that unethical if not illegal?
If the insurance company writes a check for a new car I think they own the old one and can sell it for scrap.
This is taken into account to calculate the premiums.
If the owner takes the battery I think it would be stealing.
(Not that anyone cares anymore in these times of music and video downloads.)

Re: My hybrid got wrecked
Aside from the obvious ethical issues of taking the battery, keeping it for years until needed and installing it will be dicey. It probably needs to remain charged or it will go bad. Then will a dealer be willing to use this battery pack and put it under warranty?

Re: My hybrid got wrecked
I'm glad to hear you're ok to talk about it.
Does anyone else get a sense of security from this, a large truck hit from behind, a large van smashed in the front, and yet the HCH-II did what it was supposed to and protected the driver. Huzzah to Honda for making not only a fantastically efficient car, but a small car that is safe in a world of lumbering monsters on the highway that sometimes make me feel like I would get squished in my car if involved in an altercation.
