Engine Hesitation around 3000RPM - HCH II 2006

I have some intermittent hesitation around 3000-3100RPM while driving. Seems to be fine sometimes while driving and then it can start doing it out of no where. It's almost like a rev limiter in a way. Only codes I am getting are P2185, P2651 and P0A7F.

I plan on doing a coolant change next week and replacing the Coolant temp sensor below the radiator for the P2185 code. I hope that helps. I'm not too sure what the P2651 code could be. I'm almost due for an oil change. I'll check the level tonight. I have cleared the codes and they come right back after a few min of driving.

I did get a P0111 for air intake temp sensor but it hasn't returned since I cleared it the trouble codes.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I plan on taking a 1200+ mile trip at the end of August and I'm trying to get her in good working order. I'll try to get a video when it does it again.

You need to check out your 12V battery, main ground cable and the ground straps between the CVT/frame. I think there's one on the passenger side engine mount too.

When codes start to pop up across multiple systems, the 12V battery and connections are the first to suspect. I recommend a LOAD test to confirm health of the 12V.

P2651 Valve Pause System (VPS) Stuck OFF - Check oil level. If it's not that, replace rocker arm oil control valve.

P0A7F is bad HV battery.

Thanks for the tips!

The battery was replaced in December of 2015 so its under 2 years old. I can have the battery warehouse check the grounds unless there is an easy way to do it myself?

I checked the engine oil before I started the car and the dipstick was dry. I started it and let it run for 3min and the dipstick had oil way past the 2nd hole on the dipstick. Is that normal?

I'll see if it pops back up after I get the oil changed next week.

Add oil immediately. Drive very conservatively to the nearest source of oil with gentle acceleration and slow turn speed to keep the oil from sloshing to the point that it is missed by the intake. Kind/type/brand is almost irrelevant. 0W-20, 5W-20, 5W-30 will all be better than what's happening now.

Alternatively, take it straight to have it's oil changed.

You have low oil. No, that is not normal. Engine oil should always be checked on flat surface after sitting for at least several minutes. I just remembered this exact thing happened to us when we bought our 2nd HCH2. it was extremely low on oil. The hesitation at 3000-3100 felt like a rev limiter as you describe.

Wow... crud... I hate CRS Syndrome...

I got hung up on the codes and forgot the simple sh1t.

Wow! This is crazy. My oil light never came on?!? I've been driving it for a week like this. Yikes! It was about 5,000 miles since my last change. Unless Honda under filled it...The car says I'm at 30% oil life. The hesitation only happened 6 or 7 times since it started last week. Never saw an oil leak in my garage either.

I'll see about getting it changed tonight or just adding some oil until i can get an appt.

Thank you again. You're the man.

Mine didn't either until I was really pushing it - deliberately trying to cause the issue, hard accel, hard braking, etc - trying to establish a pattern. It also helped that it was at night. On two occasions, I saw the oil lamp flicker briefly.

I added 1.5 qts of oil to get it to the bottom of the dip stick.

It's likely something you want to check at least once per month at a gas station after you've pumped your gas.

Re: Engine Hesitation around 3000RPM - HCH II 2006

I go the oil changed last night at the dealership. They ended up giving me the basic oil change price instead of the 0w-20 price. I came out on top this time! I checked the dipstick when the engine was sitting for hours and there its adequate oil on there now. No hesitation at 3000rpm last night or this morning and no P2651 code.
Thanks again for your help.

Glad that fixed it. I'd keep an eye on it and top it off as needed.

Its running good for almost a week now. Had the coolant changed and a new sensor put in under the radiator. Old one had a broken & corroded pin. The mechanic I use said he drained the coolant and replaced the sensor. I left him 2 gallons of coolant but he only needed 3/4 of a gallon to fill it back up he said. Is that normal? I did add some more to the reservoir to get between the min & max level when i got home.

Re: Engine Hesitation around 3000RPM - HCH II 2006

That certainly looks like your problem.

Cooling system capacity is 1.25 gal
Reservoir capacity is 0.11 gal

I would ask him why he only needed 0.75 gallons given the above.
