Default Braking Noise

Does anyone else have this problem?...

Sometimes when I apply the break, I hear (now get this) a quick, rubbery, sqeaking noise. It seems to come from the front, driver's side of the car, under the floor.

It doesn't happen immediately upon braking, but rather after applying some force, then applying a little more. When I apply the second level of force, the sqeak noise shows up.

It's definitly not the sqeaking of the brake pads. I've never heard it in other cars. It souns a bit like something rubber being pushed across a vinyl floor (does that make sense?).

I have, so far, been told that this is the auto-stop kicking on and changing power sources for the A/C. Basically, they're saying that the noise comes from the A/C switching from motor power to ICE power.

I know this isn't the case, because the sound pops up way before the auto-stop kicks in. Sometimes I hear it while I'm going faster than 30 mph.

Anyway, thanks for reading this and please let me know if anyone else has had similar problems.

Thanks!

Hi Koba,

I have the same sound coming from mine, it only happens every so often, and sounds a bit like a 'fart'. Like yours it's only when I am applying the brakes and give the pedal a bit of extra pressure when slowing down. To me it sounds like its coming from just behind the brake pedal, but from the inside of the car.

I mentioned it to the Technician when it went in for it's first service and he seemed to understand what I meant and reckons it's air in the hydrolics? whatever that means. I havn't been too worried since it doesn't sound as if it's a major problem.

Hopefully somoeone else will post a proper explanation of what it actually is.

Cheers,
Adam

Adam,

Thanks for your reply. It sounds like you are describing the exact same noise! Funny how great if feels to finally find out I'm not (totally) crazy.

First the tech that I talked to said he suspected it was a "relay." Then, the next tech said it was something about the A/C switching from elec. motor to ICE power, during auto-stop.

I'm going in for another "discussion" with the Honda service tomorrow morning.

I'll post if I hear anything new. I hope someone is able to get to the bottom of this. I'm sure it's not a "normal" noise, since the pre-delivery inspection explicity states that "squeaks and rattles" are to be sought out during inspection.

Thanks,
Koba

Both of you are dead on about the noise. My honda dealer never heard about it and the noise is somewhat hard to reproduce so I am not sure of the value of leaving the car at the dealership for a day. If anyone gets it repaired please post it. Thank-you

This happens to me on hot days with the a/c on, usually right after I have started the car and am coming to my first stop. Always goes away though...

My car does it too... though the air needn't always be on.
The service guys think I'm crazy.

I get a faint hum when the batteries are either charging a fair amount, or discharging a fair amount....always the same duration, and once it starts, it lasts that duration. My dealer said it was a natural part of the electrical system. He also said some people can't hear it, though he hears it in his. Is that what you're talking about?

It's been a week since I posted my original message about the braking noise (some describe it as the car farting . A quick note, I can hear the noise when my A/C is on or off.

Well, after going back and forth with the service manager at the dealership where I bought it I might be getting somewhere. Originally, they said it was a "normal" noise. After much insistence on my part that the car should not be making strange squeak/honk noises, they test drove it some more.

They opened a case with Honda Tech-line and assigned me a case number. The brake system engineer "specialist" at Honda said that they believed it was a normal noise. Something to do with the braking power system recharging (or, something like that)… I wasn't comfortable with the explanation, but said that if they put it into writing, I would drive me car home. The Honda engineers were unwilling to give me anything in writing (all of this via the service manager).

But here's where it gets even crazier... the service manager was ready to give me my car back. But, after a full week of test driving, she decided to take it for a wash and to fill up the tank. On the day I was to get it back she drove it to the gas station and heard what she described as a "honk" coming from under the dash/brake area.

Now she thinks it is some other problem, other than what the braking system engineer "specialist" hypothesized. So, now they're ordering me a part and I haven't driven my car for over a week! The good news is that I think we’re talking about the same noise now.

They ordered the following part:

“Servo Set”

- Including “power servo / booster”

“master cylinder”

This is part of the “advanced hydraulic braking system.” She said the part cost $1100. Apparently Honda isn’t very happy that this is being replaced. But, both the service manager and I are convinced it is a strange noise (that should not be considered normal).

The key here is to keep at it, even when you think you are starting to look a little crazy.

I’m getting my car back tomorrow… I’ll post when I find out if this really fixes the problem.

Thanks.

Hope your car is in good shape. The noise I was talking about was definitely not a 'honk' or anything remotely like it. Mine appears to be normal. Glad the service manager pressed harder to get a real solution to your problem, though!
