Default 2007 HCHII brake replacement

I'm thinking i'm going to need brakes for my '07 HCH soon. They're squeaking pretty much every time I stop these days (used to just be the first stop or two if it's damp/humid, not now).

Has anyone had this done somewhere other than the dealership?

Any reason that I shouldn't go to a local shop/Sears/Firestone/etc?

Oh and cost, any ideas?

Thanks!

Any mechanic or brake shop will do it with ease. Standard brake system. H

Okay I just wanted to make sure. I know that I don't bother going to normal shops for oil since they actually want more than the dealership still.

Thanks Harold!

Good to know. I have a 2006 with over 85K miles on it and still have not replaced the original brakes. Last inspection said i have 5mm left on the fronts. People are surprised when I tell them this.

Well I was right, needs brakes. I'm down to 2.5mm according to the dealership.

Dealer is $179.95, going to call around for other estimates now.

front pads is an EASY 1 one hour job, a Walmart tool kit and a C-clamp.

Do it yourself and then treat yourself to a nice dinner with the money you saved.

Eh I'm not the type, the best you get from me are the girlie things like cleaning my car after my husband takes it on a road trip and leaves it messy for me.

I ended up at Sears and so far everything seems to be fine. $155 with tax and then I got a $30 "bonus card" that I can use anywhere in the store. Not a bad deal I suppose. But hey I could wander the mall and spend my savings vs the dealer on clothes!
