creaking when steering
hello all,
my wife's 2003 hch just started doing this. basically when you turn the wheel either way, it starts creaking pretty badly. you can feel the vibrations slightly in the wheel. while trying to find something on the web, i came across this guy on youtube with the EXACT same problem
anyone know what might be causing this?

Re: creaking when steering
I had occasion to explore the steering column on my 2005 HCH when I was having problems with what turned out to be a faulty steering rack. the steering column is supported by bearings and then articulates at the firewall with a universal joint. Either of these might be the culprit.
Although it is a bit difficult to make the sound out clearly on the YouTube clips, it sounded a bit like plastic rubbing on plastic. It also sounds like it originates in the passenger compartment rather than in the engine bay. Any chance the plastic steering column trim has been displaced so as to make contact with the turning steering wheel? Could a bit of debris have found its' way in there? You might try removing the plastic column trim pieces, top and bottom, and see if the noise stops in order to narrow down the list of possible causes. It could be something that simple.
Here's a link to an site where you can find exploded drawing of the trimpieces (and the rest of the car): http://www.bernardiparts.com Once you enter basic model info go to the "interior bumper" section, then the "instrument panel/garnish (driver's side)" assembly drawing. There are three or four screws on the underside of the column trim. You might need to move the tilt of the wheel up or down to get clearance, but other than that it's a pretty simple procedure.
