I am considering purchasing a used 2008 Tahoe Hybrid. It has 63K miles and appears to be in excellent condition. It would be a second vehicle for errands, some trips, and towing a boat or camper.
I am concerned about having to replace the hybrid battery in the future. Can anyone tell me the life expectancy of the battery and the replacement cost?
Does anyone think I should pass on the vehicle even if it is mechanically sound?
I would appreciate any input.

 

The HV battery is made by by Panasonic and uses the same NiMh chemistry as the Toyota Prius. Since it is chemistry it can always have an issue with temperature extremes and time. In practice these batteries in 2 Modes and in the Prius have lasted over 250k miles. Prius batteries are still going after a decade.

Your replacement cost will be about $2500 if you trede in the old one. A couple hours maximum labor for maybe another $200. A good dealer should be able to put the battery in for the suggested retail and still make money.

Too many alarmists out there saying the battery is much more.

Thank you very much for your reply to my post. I bought the Tahoe after doing a little more research myself. I could not find a significant reason not to by the vehicle. It rides great and I am excited to have a SUV that gets excellent gas mileage. I did purchase an extended warranty up to 150K just in case.

The only issue I have with my 2008 tahoe hybrid is the door locks all failed repeatedly, and the dash is cracked above instrument cluster.

Both are well documented issues.

The dash cracking issue is an ongoing dilemma, you can follow the facebook page about it.

As usual, GM isnt doing anything about either.

Otherwise, great truck. It looks good and rides good, pulls boats, and nets a solid 18 mpg city with my wife driving it (lets just say she is not concerned with keeping it in hybrid mode).

Post up some pics, also wonder what price range you got it for.

I drove a 167,000 mile Tahoe hybrid this weekend, with original battery, and it worked well. Actually considering buying the Tahoe as it drives and looks like a 40,000 mile one.

Fyi.. I bought it !!! 08 yukon 112000 it has a new motor factory crate motor ... so far I love it !!! And I thank all of you that answered my questions its really great to have a place to get info ....I'll try and add picts .bit so fari can't figure out how to add it yo my garage profile ...should be a button that say add vertical. . Maybe I'm not seeing it..
