I just purchased a 2008 Yukon Hybrid with 8500 Miles.

I am just getting familiar with the vehicle. I would like to know if a high pitched whine is commonly heard in this vehicle when accellerating from a stop or stopping. I sounds like a police or fire siren several blocks away - changing pitch up as I accellerate - down as I slow to a stop.

On a couple occaisions I looked for a emergency vehicle only to realize it was the hybrid.

This is not particularly loud - but with the radio off the cabin is relatively silent so the noise is distinctly audable. My hearing is just fair and other passengers hear this as well.

Does everyone have this? Certainly my prius has no such noises.

 

the electric motors whine a bit if you are moving in in EV mode only.
i looked for the emergency vehicles too!

 

no loud whining here at all, if you really focus you can hear it, but not when I am driving normally, I wouldn't mix it up with emergnecy vehicle for sure.
I can hear it when braking with windows down, but still not loud at all

 

We're used to it now, but I used to always think I was getting pulled over...
Maybe I'm more paranoid or guilty than others.

 

Me too... I looked for emergency vehicles when I first got mine. Now I'm used to it.

 

I am familiar with this noise. I believe you are hearing the electric motor spinning up or down. I notice it more on braking. It is how electricity is generated to charge the traction battery.
