So far I've had one Iphone 8gig (not G3) and one Ipod touch, also 8 gig, successfully hooked up to SYNC, both using the USB drive. This is in my '09 FEH.
As for your problem with the speach recognition. In the 09 you can set up a user profile to help it undersand it's owners voice (two infact). So far it's helped. I even turned it up to the advanced so it dosn't always ask if "is that right?"
