Default Hybrid battery air filter

I've read that I should replace the rear cargo air filter for my 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid battery. However, when I opened the filter compartment, there was no filter in place! So apparently there has not been a filter in the vehicle since I purchased it in 2005. Was there supposed to be one there? And should I put one there now? The compartment was clean. Thanks.

Yes, there was supposed to be one in there and you should definitely put one is ASAP.

And be careful of the plastic clips that hold the filter cover in place. One of mine broke and I still haven't figured out a good way to fix it.
