Sunmotor takes “innovative” approach to design

The SMART fortwo has gradually made its way into the
American market and into economy-minded Americans hearts, and in light of that
success, other start-up companies have popped up to try to enter the growing
Electronic Vehicle market.  One such
company, is Boston-based Sunmotor, and they have announced that they will debut
their first vehicle by the end of the 2008 calendar year.

The specifications of the car sound good, but maybe not good
enough to compete with the big market alternative power vehicles.  The Sunmotors EV claims to have a top speed
of only 25mph, and although it claims 160 miles between charges, the 10
horsepower engine may labor to move the 2600lb vehicle.  However, the “performance” numbers of this
new car are not the most interesting feature.

The appearance of the Sunmotors EV are unique, to say the
least, with a roofline that protrudes out away from the rear end of the
vehicle, and a similar protrusion along the top of the windshield exists in
order to make room for solar panels.
This has given the car quite an odd profile, making unlike any other EV
on the market, but many wonder if the shape of the car will be its undoing.

No price has been given yet on the new Sunmotors EV, but
with questionable power outputs and a truly unusual design, we will have to
wait until the release to see if this small market company can take a shot at
the likes of smart.
