Porsche Unveils Mission R Concept Study at IAA MOBILITY 2021

The 1,073 HP all-electric drivetrain of Mission R delivers performance that can rival the latest 911 GT3 Cup.

The highly anticipated IAA MOBILITY is finally here, and Porsche made a big splash in Munich with its Mission R concept study. The Stuttgart-based automaker revealed the futuristic concept car just ahead of the motor show. Mission R is Porsche’s first-ever battery-only race car concept. The German automaker’s latest offering celebrates its motorsport lineage. The concept study is Porsche’s way of proposing a zero-emissions future for motorsport.

An 80 kWh battery pack propels this EV by sending the power to a pair of newly developed electric motors. The electric drivetrain produces 1,073 HP of maximum power in its “qualifying mode.” As a result of this, Mission R can accelerate from 0 to 62 MPH in under 2.5 seconds. Mission R’s drivetrain produces 680 HP of constant power output when it’s not in qualifying mode. The top speed of the all-wheel-drive EV is limited to 186 MPH.

The Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG- Oliver Blume- shared his thoughts on the Mission R concept study. “In addition to our involvement in the Formula E World Championship, we are now taking the next big step forward in electric mobility. The concept study is our vision of all-electric customer motorsports. The Mission R embodies everything that makes Porsche strong: performance, design and sustainability.”

Mission R gets 900-volt battery technology

In addition to Porsche Turbo Charging, the Mission R concept study also gets 900-volt technology. It only takes 15 minutes to recharge Mission R’s oil-cooled battery pack from 5% to 80% capacity. Porsche used sustainable materials to build this striking racer. The automaker used carbon fiber to build the safety structure and natural fiber reinforced plastic (NFRP) to build the body panels, and interiors of Mission R. A large rear wing ensures that this lightweight racer has all the traction it needs. The concept study is a valiant effort by Porsche and might soon revolutionize the world of motorsports.

“Porsche is the brand for people who fulfil their dreams. This is also true in motorsports. We experience our innovative strength on the race track, demonstrate courage in pursuing new avenues and delight car owners with sporting performance,” said Blume.
