Record Distance Set By Mercedes EQXX, Record Fastest Run At Goodwood

Mercedes EQXX goes 746 miles on a single charge, and the McMurtury Speirling has the fastest ever Goodwood sprint.

When it comes to flexing their EV muscles, Mercedes is pretty good at it. And they just did one rep better with the EQXX experimental car. At 746 miles, the EQXX represents the longest trip this Mercedes EV has covered. It also shows us what may lie ahead for range and future tech.

With special low rolling resistance tires and an ultra slippery body, the EQXX puts efficiency as top priority. It’s not really a production vehicle at the moment, but it does showcase what an EV can do in the engineering hands of Mercedes. But don’t think of it as an AMG. This one makes just 241 horsepower according to AutoWeek.

Still, if there are EVs with a range this vast in the future many of the complaints about these cars will fade off into the past.

This narrow EV called the Mc Murtry Speirling just set the overall record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

On the complete opposite end of the EQXX is the Murtury Speirling. The beauty of EVs is that they can show up in all shapes and sizes. So our traditional mindset to speed changes rapidly when the power units are no longer packaged like a traditional ICE engine. In the case of this UK EV startup, that means the engines can be in the rear wheels. And it can be tiny. As in, 20 inches shorter than a Chevy Spark according to Car and Driver.

But what’s more impressive is the tech behind it. Race cars can make two kinds of grip; mechanical grip, and aero grip. Wide tires – mechanical grip. Big wings – aero grip. What about a car with massive amounts of aero grip? Well, thats why the Speriling has fans in the body that assist the wings. To the tune of 2000 pounds of downforce at a standstill according to SXDRV.

Translated to real world, it means it’s crazy fast. So fast that it now has the record for the fastest run at Goodwood Festival of speed. It beat a Formula 1 car, and even more impressively it beat the Volkswagen ID.R. by setting a time of 39.08 seconds.

A limited number of road going cars will be made according, and we can’t wait to see them.
