Built on Hyundai’s E-GMP EV platform, GV60 Genesis’ newest entry in the luxury EV space, is another step for Hyundai’s own electric path.

Over the past few years, Hyundai’s IONIQ line of hybrids, PHEVs and EVs have paved a path towards the company’s goal of selling one million electric vehicles by 2025. Spun-off into its own sub-brand, IONIQ is now one prong in Hyundai’s charge into the new frontier.

Meanwhile, the parent company has been working on other EV offerings between its namesake brand and Kia, including the EV6 and Kona Electric crossovers. Hyundai’s luxury sub-brand, Genesis, already has the Electrified G80. Now, it has a crossover to match: the GV60.

Based upon Hyundai’s dedicated E-GMP platform for all of the company’s current and upcoming EVs, the GV60’s design features a wider version of Genesis’ signature Crest Grille for improved battery cooling. Such cooling comes in handy while charging, whether its a brisk day at the station, or via fans blowing air through the grille. It also justifies the repurposing of open grilles found on ICE machines for battery cooling.

Inside the new Genesis GV60 is the “Crystal Sphere.” The shift-by-wire unit lives within a shell designed to fit the sub-brand’s “Beauty of White Space” interior language. When the crossover is off, the sphere gives off ambient lighting. Once the EV has started, though, the sphere reveals the unit, signaling that the Genesis is ready to go.

However, the most important feature is that E-GMP platform. Per J.D. Power, the platform includes multi-charger technology. Such tech gives any Genesis, IONIQ or Kia the ability to recharge off any provided outlet. On a fast-charge system, a vehicle with the platform can receive 80% of its total range in 20 minutes.

The GV60 looks to take territory away from the Jaguar I-Pace, Audi e-tron, and Tesla Model X. It also bolsters the IONIQ sub-brand and Kia EV6, all of which use the E-GMP platform. Though Genesis already has the Electrified G80, the GV60 gives the sub-brand a bigger stake in the luxury EV game. In turn, it signals to the world just how far Hyundai itself has come along, and its future to come.
