2022 GMC HUMMER EV Test Mules Tackle Moab

GMC’s exciting video showcases four HUMMER EV prototypes executing challenging off-road maneuvers on grueling Moab terrains.

It seems like Utah is the place to be for all off-roaders right now. After Couch Off-Road Engineering’s Mercedes Unimog rig, our very own GMC has decided to use the challenging terrains of Moab as testing grounds for the HUMMER EV. The company recently shared an update on the upcoming EV’s off-road testing and development along with its complete off-road specifications.

GMC also shared a video that shows four HUMMER EV prototypes executing different off-road maneuvers. The company confirmed was using the test mules to calibrate features like Extract Mode, stability control, Terrain Mode, CrabWalk, and much more. Like Hyundai IONIQ 5, the HUMMER EV will also get a “purpose-designed” One-Pedal Driving control feature.

GMC HUMMER EV lead development engineer, Aaron Pfau described the applications and capability of the feature, “One-Pedal Driving offers a great feeling of control by optimizing the regenerative braking, friction braking and drive motor torque all through the accelerator pedal.” He further added, “Drivers will quickly realize the benefits once they try it off-road.”

The One-Pedal Driving control allows the driver to regulate the vehicle’s speed by operating just the accelerator pedal. In Terrain Mode, the One-Pedal Driving control also helps maneuver the vehicle on challenging trails at low speeds without using the brake pedal. This feature comes in handy, especially when once tackling steep inclines.

“The GMC HUMMER EV was a blank slate that was filled out by a dedicated team of engineers who are hardcore off-road enthusiasts,” said Pfau. “Features like One-Pedal Driving, Terrain Mode, and Extract Mode result in an absolute off-road beast that will take you to new places.”

The 2022 HUMMER EV also comes equipped with Adaptive Air Suspension, which can raise the vehicle by almost 6 inches with the help of the available Extract Mode. The EV will be powered by GMC’s Ultium cells, which will use a wireless battery management system to monitor the health of modules. The HUMMER EV SUT’s EV3 and Edition 1 models will produce 1000 HP and 11,500 lb-ft of torque. The latter will be GMC’s first offering to use this proprietary battery technology.

Along with the F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T, the GMC HUMMER EV is probably the most anticipated battery-only pickup truck debut of the year. The HUMMER EV is scheduled to enter production later in the fall. GMC introduced the HUMMER EV with the Edition 1 variants, and these will be the first models to enter production. Even with a $112,595 price tag, these models were sold out within the first hour of launch.
