New Clutch?

Toyota's website for the 450h mentions a new drivetrain that has 2 clutches, an inner one and an outer one, each capable of interfacing with the wheels. Since the Lexus still seems to use a Power-Split-Device (from the Prius), which seemed to eliminate the issue of a clutch, I'm surprised to see a clutch - let alone 2 - in this car. And knowing Toyota, if the clutch is back... it's probably not a typical clutch.

Anyone have any info on how it works?

Re: New Clutch?

The drivetrain has dual speed reduction gears between MG2 and the ring gear of the PSD.
The clutches are used to switch the gear ratio.

Are they typical clutch plates? Or something fancier?
