Default UK 'thumbs down' on "Bell the Hybrid"

Making a noise for electric and hybrid vehicles
25 September 2008
Concerns over the safety of super-quiet hybrid and electric cars do not seem to trouble the UK public, according to research from TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk.

When visitors to the green car advisory website were asked, “Should the UK government introduce legislation to make it compulsory for manufacturers of electric and hybrid vehicles to add artificial noise for road safety purposes?”, 55 per cent replied “No”. While others thought it should be left to the manufacturer’s discretion, polling 16 per cent of the vote.
. . .
This is the first article I've seen reporting the wide-spread opposition to the "Bell the Hybrid" act. Granted, it is not a scientific survey, it was web based. However, I've noticed that past articles about putting noise makers on hybrids were followed by negative reader feedback, noise makers have been universally escoriated. It is gaining no traction even when written up in the most glowing and kind terms.

This article goes on to talk about sleigh bells and the winter quiet of snow. In fact, "TheGreenCarWebsite" has been an advocate but even they admit, this pig won't fly. But this article, kicking and fighting in support of noise makers, is a welcome relief because even they can not deny reality forever.
