Mitsubishi Motors to mass-produce electric motorcar in 2010

[Asia] Mitsubishi Motors Corp. said Thursday it plans to mass-produce electric motorcars in 2010, while launching a brand-new model of a sport utility vehicle this fall and a mini-vehicle model in January next year...

Masuko said the envisaged electric car will have a lithium-ion battery, emitting no gas and requiring only one-fifth the energy to drive compared with hybrid gasoline-electric cars.

The electric car will be modeled on the mini-vehicle called i, also a brand-new model, and have an "in-wheel motor" system in which a motor is directly attached to the wheels, according to a company official. The car will make its first test run next year, the official said.

Nice! Gold star for Mitsubishi. :sun:

Maybe I'll be push-pull-dragging my current '91 Mitsubishi to trade in for one of their EVs. Lithium Ion, sounds like it might be an expensive EV... Let's hope not.

The most important figure that the public needs to know about an electric car is how many miles/kilometres can it do without having to recharge. Anything below 100 miles / 150 kms is probably not enough for a lot of people.

GO-HEV (gas optional, hybrid electric vehicle)
is the mainstream future, IMO.

Pure EV is a niche market. Too expensive, too limited. At least in the US. Megacitiy dwellers in Europe and Asia may feel differently.
