Third party GPS in a HCHII - mounting them

Hi All,

since NAV isn't an option in Canada, I am looking at third party GPS's. Now, I looked at a few and all come with a 'window' suction cup. Several issues that I see:

- The window in the 2006 is a lot deeper than traditional desings
- The dash itself is very uneven

So, here is my question, do any of you 2006 Civic Hybrid owner have a third party GPS unit and if so, how is it mounted?

Thanks,
Stephane.

Of course, I don't own a HCHII. But I do have a mounting solution for GPS, as I have one on my motorcycle. Let me see if I can find you some information and I'll post you a link.

I have a ram mount on my bike for my eMap GPS. In my wife's Escape, I mounted her XM Roady2 with a piece of sheet metal, bent into shape and mounted to the dash. The sheetmetal route is definitely much cheaper. I bought a small piece of sheet metal and snips to cut it with from Lowes for something like $12. Plenty of sheet metal left for other projects.

Hi Keith,

thanks for the info. I want to know if the fact that the window is farther than normal causing any issues with current suction window mounts. If I put it on the window, will it be too far for me to reach it?

Thanks,
Stephane.

Possibly. I haven't sat in an HCHII yet.

The mount Wayne is using will avoid the problem of the windshield mount being too far out of reach.

If I had to install an aftermarket GPS in my wife's Escape, I'd find the most convenient place for it so that I'd be able to see it easily while driving and be able to reach the buttons to control it. In my situation, on the dash, right above the radio is where I'd put it. So knowing where I want it, I'd then start looking at mounts until I found one that would allow such an installation.

I use an Arkon "cup holder", PDA Holder. You mentioned 3rd party, but not if it was a "TomTom"/Garmin type or a PDA. Anyway, if it is a PDA here is another option.

Hi,

all great suggestions so far. BTW, I am looking at a Garmin Nuvi 350.

Thanks,
Stephane.

May I suggest the Garmin 330/340 Series. Simple touchscreen operation, preload maps and database, no disks, computers or downloads for every trip, better map and poi info than Tom-Tom and simpler than all others.
Don't even need to read the instructions to operate it, right out of the box.
The windshield mount will work on other surfaces with included disk. Here's my install in the minivan
