First 600 mile tank

I know this is pretty humble compared to you road warriors, but I got my first 600 mile tank at just over 50 mpg. I am pretty excited and think it is good due to my short commutes and hlly neighborhood. I guess I'll try to figure out how to get 650 miles now.

Hey, congrats. My first 700 mile tank was a Big Happy Moment for me. I got two in a row then have not had one since. :( But I shall rise again !!! Someday. :D

Re: First 600 mile tank

How many gallons does a HCH hold? Mine only holds about 10 gallons and so far the best ive done is 530 miles (53.2 mpg) ave

Re: First 600 mile tank

Rated at 11.9 gallons for the PZEV version and 13.2 gallons for the SULEV/ULEV versions. Some drivers have put as much as 15.2 gallons in a SULEV version though. Capacity will fluctuate depending on various factors.

Good for you, wait until you get 650. Then you'll feel the same feeling again that you feel now. It's a super feeling, huh.

Re: First 600 mile tank

It holds 13.2. I put 12 even in it this time

Hi Clayk:

___600 miles is just your first step. 650 and 700 will fall soon enough. Once you really get the hang of it, 800 + may be the norm if you really want it ;) Congrats on your first tank and I hope to see and hear the details of many more to come!

Re: First 600 mile tank

As of pulling in the parking lot of work today I have 595 miles on this tank, and three bars left. This will be my first 600 mile tank too!

Inflating my tires to 40 PSI defiantly made a big difference.

Congrats!

Re: First 600 mile tank

I'll never be able to tell how many miles i can get to a tank. A few days ago I had 3 bars when I left work and 20 miles into my commute the tank showed completely empty. Fuel guages are never perfect indicators but that struck me as being a bit much.

Re: First 600 mile tank

Ron,

The way I do it is this:

The first time I get a "low fuel light" I estimate I have 80 miles left, a most conservative figure. I have gone up to 120 more miles, so figuring 80 has been a good estimate. That way, I accomplish two things:

1. Minimize my trips to refuel.
2. Know for sure I'm not going to run out.

Has worked for almost 15 months, and I never sweat low bars, and don't have to use any brain power other than "go no farther than 80 miles after the first time the low fuel light appears."

I bet this would work for every HCH owner.

Re: First 600 mile tank

just wanted to say congratulations and also mention today i got my first 600 miles on one tank also, 605miles on 11.1 gallons. i have a pzev with the 11.9 gallon tank, so only .7 gallons left. i guess i could have gone to 650, but i was nervous driving that long with no bars! congrats man!

Re: First 600 mile tank

my last tank was over 600 too. i went about 20 miles with no bars in my gas gauge, i knew i should have been able to go farther but it was making me nervous, i was too scared i was going to run out of gas in the middle of nowhere so i had to stop to refuel.

Congradulations Clay that's quite an accomplishment.....especially with gas prices soaring as they are.

What do your friends and collegues say?

Re: First 600 mile tank

Hey congrats to all in the over 600 club!
I did my first 600 & 650 tank this summer. I have a pzev tank (11.9) and I know from previous fillings that 1 bar left :I fill to 10 gallons, no bars left :I fill to 10.5 gallons- so when the last bar goes off, I have at least 1 gallon left. I figure I can go another 50-55 miles with no bars- depending on my current mpg. I did my 650 tank then filled with 11.4 gallons (to first click off).
of course I'm greedy- now I want a 700 tank & I'm frustrated I can't get up to Kenny & HGs numbers. who have thunk a year ago, I would be unsatisfied with 55mpg?!?

My friends have been quite impressed. I tend to prattle on with hbrid tales to my co-workers, and they have grown tired of my sories. I certainly do not blame them. However, they are impressed with the 50mpg tank.

Re: First 600 mile tank

got my first 650 this week. but it probably doesnt count because the other times i filled it before it got too low. but i thought i would see how far i could go, and how much would be left when the light came on.....i put 11.6 into the 13.2 tank, so i could have gone another 100 miles or so. good to know that.

Re: First 600 mile tank

darn, and i was so proud of myself for getting my first 500+ mile tank this week :embarass: . i drove with zero bars for quite a while though and still to this point have never filled up 12 gallons or over. i guess i could easily squeeze at least another 50 miles out of her, but as with the others, driving with zero bars for that long scares the crap outta me.

i have one question for lars though, when you see that light go on for the first time, do you mean, goes on and stays on, or the first time it goes on, even if it may turn off and then turn back on (this is always the case for me, the light turns on, then i miraculously get more bars and the light turns off). because i would like to implement your strategy of 80 miles left from now on to help maximize each tank ;) , thanks.

Re: First 600 mile tank

my last bar will usually go off, then if I'm driving for a while economically- it will come back on again. I usually check my tank mileage when it first goes off, and then again when it goes off the second time. (usually that's it for good). because I've filled several times at 2 bars, (10g)and at 1 bar 10.5g) I know when it goes off for good I have 1-1.4 gallons left (11.9g pzev tank). so based on my mileage I can go a good bit past no bars: if you're getting 45mpg go 40 then fill and see how many gallons it takes. I get mid 50s mpg, so if I want a record tank, I'll go for 50ish past no bars. depends on my current driving situation, and what kind of mileage I'm getting. I reset my trip meter so I have good current values. hope that helps....

Re: First 600 mile tank

Just a note. We should stop using solid numbers when we talk to people about how far we go on empty. We should probably start to use percentages. Because if somone normaly gets 50mpg they can go 50 miles on a gallon, but if the person they are talking to gets 45 then if they think they will get the same 50 miles they may end up running out of gas.

Re: First 600 mile tank

Absolutely. Some people may get 60 miles to a bar and others may get 20 by the end of a tank. I know I for one have a very fickle meter and my last bars drop at enormous rate. I doubt I'd ever squeeze 80 miles out of an empty gauge, even if I'm getting 60 MPG.

Re: First 600 mile tank

Hi HelterSkelter:

___If I know you, you would not be satisfied with just 80 miles on a 0 bar Fuel gauge, you would push it to 100! In the process, you might find out just how good you are at hypermiling as there is nothing quite like driving on absolute fumes when your local station is still 10 - 15 miles away ;)

Re: First 600 mile tank

Way to go! You've come a LONG ways from your first tanks here!

PS- Xcel, I never saw your post for some reason until now. You're right, it was a thrill to hypermile the crap out of an empty tank. When I did it for 700, I think I spent maybe only 40 miles on 0 bars and then called it a tank when I broke the barrier. This tank when the time comes you're absolutely right - I'm going for 100 on empty.

darn, i didn' t know there was a club....

i did a 632 mile tank a few weeks ago, and stopped to fill up. found out i still had a little less than 2 gallons left. nuts. i could have had a 700..... :(

I hate you people with the big tank! I have the itty bitty pzev tank- ugh. I got a 650 tank this summer- but 700 is pretty damm far out of reach for me.
I wish I'd thought of taking a picture though.....
not that anyone I know- including my husband and kids- would look at it. I don't even dare mention mileage around here anymore.
and while we're on the subject of mileage- my I just say....THIS COLD WEATHER STINKS!!! I am seriously depressed about my current tank average!

oh dear, do you have one of those spouses who doesn't care?  thank goodness mine got over his need for speed when he sold his ford lightening pickup. we have a 4x4 chevy but only use it for hauling feed and other farm stuff. he commutes to work in my old 93 civic, and gets great mileage in it.

i am still waiting for cold. it's almost the end of october and here in minnesota, we are still having 50-60s during the day. not right!!! i can maintain my 54-55mpg, but don't know what will happen when it's more like zero. i will be happy if i can keep it over 50 all winter.

kate, as i read your post again, i wondered why you ended up with the smaller tank? are they sold in certain regions?

Muahahaha I finally get my payoff for having to run AC in 105 degree heat all summer long. Maybe I'll be able to inch closer to some of you 50+ MPGers as winter sets in. ;)

They use a different kind of tank that prevents any gasses from escaping in the PZEV regions ('clean states' ie dirty states) and I suppose the design is such that it holds less fuel in the same space because of the walls needing to be able to hold a certain amount of pressure.

Same kind of difference between the North American Prius II and the Japan Prius II. 2006 HCH will be PZEV in all North American areas, so it's going to have a tank size in between the current small and large tanks.

Re: First 600 mile tank

I do feel guilty I'm spamming godknowswhat nasty gases in exorbitant amounts into the atmosphere but I gotta say - it does feel nice using those extra gallons to the very max to lengthen those tank trips.
