The way I understand it, the HAH does not have an alternator. It uses the same recharging system for the 12V battery as it uses for the hybrid pack. If your 12V battery is not holding a charge, that would lead to the recharging system working constantly, giving you lower gas mileage.

You know how when your hybrid battery gets low (like 1 or two bars), the charge light will come on at lows speeds and mild acceleration? That's essentially what would be happening if your 12V battery is low.
