How many HCH II's are currently registered for use in North America?

I cannot say for all of North America as registration is not all reporting by type (there are a lot of civics and hybrids are not singled out in most states) but sales of HCH II have averaged about 6750 per year (this year 2009) has really sucked as it is off over 50 percent ). That means a little over 25,000 have been delivered. Also Mexican sales are not included ( I would guess less than 100 in Mexico ).

A few are on dealers lots and a few have been totaled. So you can derive how many are in North America.

My game plan is to drive the car a minimum 10 years and will probably have 250,000 km (about 160,000 miles) on it.

In a perfect world, it would be awesome if a higher capacity battery (say lithium ion or other technology and software update to utilize same) could be bought (or leased from a third party) and simply swapped out.....

what I read is that they were way more than 25,000 HCH-2's sold. this means that since 2006 Honda actually sold more than 100,000 of them just in north america.
If I remember right, honda sold way more than 35,000 /year in 2006/2007/2008 alone.
