'09 vs '08 stock hybrid wheels

It seems that the only change in wheel design for the '09s was to open the vented slots around the circumference of the rim. Does anyone know whether Honda made this change for practical (performance) reasons? Or just purely cosmetic reasons?

The 2009 Civic Hybrid has rear disk brakes and need more cooling that is why the extra slots are in the 09. The earlier HCHII have drum brakes in the rear.

Thanks, Larry. Ya' know, I'm tempted to believe you, but... it doesn't seem that the rear brakes would require more/bigger slots than did the front discs during '06-'08. Still, you could be on the right track... hmmm...
