HCH Battery Problem

I just bought a 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid last week. I bought the car on Tuesday, drove to school all week and it was fine. On saturday, I drove to work and when I came out at the end of the day, it would not start. The lights were dim and the battery apparently dead. I jumped it, it started fine. I came out to leave for work the next morning and it was dead again. I drove to work, this time took a little extra time to drive it, and when I came out at the end of the day, started fine.

Here are the factors that make this situation different, 1: It was probably in the mid 30's to 40's both days and raining. 2: I only drive about 3 miles to work.

I have been driving it to school (25 miles) all week waiting to see if any more problems, but none. My theory is that the Hybrid battery is sucking power from the 12v battery and that this was influenced by the cold... Any ideas?

Re: HCH Battery Problem

Maybe you should have the under-hood 12V battery checked. It may be time for a replacement, especially if it's the original 12V.

(I just had mine replaced last week, same year of car.)

Re: HCH Battery Problem

Well it was supposed to have been replaced as per the dealer. I am wondering if they may have chosen an inferior battery. Is there a certain type of 12v battery that should be put in? I am in touch with the dealer and they are willing to replace it if it is not correct. I did also check the 12v with a charger/indicator and it was showing over 90% voltage.

Re: HCH Battery Problem

I have a 2004 HCH with 195 K miles. The IMA system is putting out Hybrid battery deterioration codes. Then the 12 volt battery started going dead over night. Replacing the 12 v battery did not help I assumed that the IMA system was the cause of the 12 v battery discharging. I used an amp meter on the battery cable with everything off and there was a 3 amp discharge. Just to make sure, I started pulling fuses and relays out of the under hood fuse box and found that the problem was caused by a bad relay in the airconditioner compressor clutch circut. A $9.00 relay fixed the problem. Still have the IMA battery problem.
