I'd love to see higher prices, not just from shortages but from higher taxes as well. The higher taxes could go twards renewable infrastructure we will one day need. Psy you can do doughnuts and waste gas if it makes you happy. I did that stuff when I was in high school too.

Topped up Sunday night at $2.38! Two days later, that station now wants $2.71!

We're likely to see a nation wide average of $3 a gallon within a week. I've kicked my driving for mileage efforts up and set some personal records already. This newer Insight is doing better than my old one.

From Bloomberg:
Wholesale gasoline prices surged 68 cents, or 28 percent, to
$3.1245 a gallon today at Gulf Coast terminals, according to data
compiled by Bloomberg. In Chicago, wholesale prices rose 61 cents
today to $2.9497 a gallon.
Colonial Pipeline Co., which runs the world's biggest network
of petroleum-product pipelines, shut two fuel pipelines yesterday
after Hurricane Katrina cut power in Mississippi and Louisiana.
The lines haul fuel from Houston to North Carolina.
Refiners and wholesalers are restricting the amount of fuel
retailers can buy, a form of rationing known in the trade as
allocation.
``Almost all the refiners are now putting marketers on
allocation east of the Rocky Mountains,'' Gilligan said today in a
phone interview. ``Some terminals in Ohio, Tennessee, Arkansas and
South Carolina are completely out of product. It's just a very
precarious situation we're in.''
Gasoline for September delivery rose 7.05 cents, or 2.9
percent, to $2.545 a gallon at 9:53 p.m. in New York Mercantile
Exchange electronic trading. The futures, which are benchmarks for
U.S. wholesale prices, rose 41.39 cents, or 20 percent, during
floor trading today, and are up 62 percent this week.
Pump prices are usually 60 cents higher than the most-active
Nymex futures contract, based on the 10-year average, Bloomberg
calculations showed. That suggests the national average retail
price may rise to $3.15 a gallon from $2.61 at the end of last
week.
There haven't been spikes like this since the first Gulf War. They'll have a better idea of the damage caused tomorrow. It always takes a few days to assess it.

For fear of shortage. I could care less about the money, really. I DO care about having to sit in a gas line AGAIN like I did two years ago when Phoenix ran out of gas and only 1 out of 8 or so stations had any fuel. It hit the news already that we may be facing a shortage:

http://www.azcentral.com/news/articl...0gas30-ON.html

Some Valley service stations reported sporadic shortages of gasoline Tuesday as a combination of refinery outages and a surge in demand left a handful of area pumps dry.

"There is definitely supply issues here in Phoenix, Arizona," said Ron Gilley, director of fuels for Circle K Stores Inc. "I think everybody is in the same boat. It is a very tough situation that everybody is faced with."

Here's a couple pictures of gas shortages in Southern China two weeks ago (prices are set artificially low).

Very scary indeed.

Next week is a pretty bad one for Hawaii's wholesale gas caps to go into effect. They're going to have to raise the cap before it begins!

The state’s Public Utilities Commission said (last) Wednesday that, beginning Sept. 1, wholesalers in Honolulu may not charge more than $2.1578 a gallon for regular unleaded, or about $2.74 a gallon when taxes are included. The commission set the caps, which will fluctuate from week to week, at different levels for other islands.

Yesterday, I hesitantly topped off our largest guzzler, the minivan, and two 5 gallon tanks at $2.75. This morning I found that prices had risen to $2.99 out here in the suburbs of Milwaukee. But that wasn't close to the worst I saw today. 90 miles later, outside of Chicago, I encountered $3+ gasoline for the first time: $3.19 at one station, with another station 2 blocks down at only $2.91. And the $3.19 station actually had more customers than the lower priced one! On the way home we stopped off to get a soda and noticed the prices had been taken down from the sign out front, except for 93 octane Premium. The clerk said he was out of the other grades and awaiting shipments, but didn't know when. At least he priced premium competitively with regular at other stations to maintain his business. On the way back up north we saw numerous other stations both above $3.00 and some out of Regular Unleaded. Glad we have full tanks, plus spares in reserve, and 2 (soon to be 3!) hybrids in the garage.

The EPA is granting an emergency waiver of clean fuel standards in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi because the impact of Hurricane Katrina “will prevent the distribution of an adequate supply of fuel to consumers that is compliant with the Clean Air Act.”

The EPA is temporarily allowing refiners, importers, distributors, carriers and retail outlets (regulated parties) to supply gasoline meeting a Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP) standard of 9.0 psi in areas of the affected states where a lower RVP is required.

They've actually dropped $.09 in the last week, even with Katrina. I won't complain.
Arrrrg, that was last night. 24 hours later it's $2.80, $2.90, $3.00 on average. Some higher, some lower.

Stubborn me, 400 miles into what I hope and believe will be my first 700 mile tank ever, chose to forgoe the fillup. Guess I'll pay for it in a couple hundred miles. Or I could hyper my way to untouched numbers and never put gasoline in my car again or at least until the oil crisis gets solved. Probably the first, though.
