2008 Escape Hybrid brake light - code C1187

My 08 Hybrid Ford Escape has the brake light warning display with no other issue. The code is C1187: brake fluid level sensor input - circuit open. Any feedback on what I can do to resolve this glitch is appreciated.

Fluid level sensor broken? Disconnected? Wire chewed through?
