Confirm 12V battery is fully charged and healthy.

Conduct diagnostics based on codes

i do not get good feedback on the store bought hand held code reader/scanner.
unless one spends an enormous sum on one, you will not have one to use
Innova wrote me back and they did not have anything for my 2009 escape hybrid limited.
need a laptop and buy the connecting cable to usb and get Forscan.

There is an Android version and cheap bluetooth OBDII interfaces that work well with Forscan, but I prefer the PC version and my Tectrix OpenPort cable.
