3/4 stars front crash rating on FEH/MMH

I've been thinking to replace my HCH1 with FEH/MMH for more room/safety but I was surprised to see the frontal crash rating for 08 FEH/MMH based on www.safercar.gov (NHTSA) was 3 stars for early 2008 production although it's been revised to 4 stars for the laters. Still, I'm used to see 5 stars for frontal crash rating nowadays kinda dissapointed that both 2008 FEH/MMH can't get 5 stars crash rating all around.

Does anyone know the difference between early producuction 08's and 08's with the higher crash rating?

I had the same thoughts, so whent to the pages and clicked on the 2 makes:

Frontal crash test results are valid for model year 2008 vehicles produced before June 6, 2007

So guess I'm a 3 :omg: But I still feel saffer than I would in any small car here in Truck Country! Sure XXXXX might get 5 stars in the "test", but what happens when kissing a F-150, 250, 350, Hummer, etc head on? I think some smaller cars could be used as a "ramp" for these trucks to drive up onto!

..I think having a head on with ANYTHING is very bad. But the heavy vehicles you mention would cause some serious damage and injury, even if both vehicles were travelling at 25 mph. Most of the problem is because of the difference in mass.

Any frontal crash is going to damage the Escape. The question is will the passengers survive.

I have not obtained information (yet) on this issue but I remember the Ford Fusion's that were made after a date in January 2007 had higher frontal crash ratings that the Fusion built before them because Ford Engineers redesigned the (floor?) to better withstand the crashes. I assume this is what happened with the 2008 Escape models.

My hood on my 2008 that was just built this last month is so heavy, I almost dropped it before I realized it. Is this normal? Maybe they reinforced the hood to improve the front crash test.

Thanks for the link.

I went poking around the IIHS website, and found the Escape. If I am reading it correctly, it seems that they didn't think the 2008 changes were significant enough to warrant re-testing the vehicle.

The IIHS did mention...

"Note: These ratings and specifications do not apply to the hybrid (gas-electric) versions of the Escape and Mariner".
