This is an advertisment from Feb. 1938 and details Gulf Oil company added ethanol to their gasoline.

I wonder what percent ethanol Gulf Oil added to their gasoline?

I could be wrong, by the "ethyl" is short for tetra-ethyl-lead, what we used to call leaded gasoline. Effectively boosted the octane rating of gas and reduced valve seat wear on older cars that used softer metals for the valve seats.
